California Ground Squirrel
Otospermophilus beecheyiRed
The California ground squirrel lives in grasslands, hillsides and open woodland in western North America. Its mottled brown coat blends with soil and dry vegetation. Unlike squirrels that spend most of their time in trees, it digs underground burrows that provide shelter and safe chambers for raising young.

The animal behind the card
Active by day, it gathers seeds, fruit, shoots and occasional small animals. Cheek pouches allow it to carry food before storing it. Several squirrels often occupy the same area, using alarm calls to warn one another of predators before retreating quickly into a nearby burrow entrance.
Its encounters with snakes reveal remarkable defensive behaviour. It flags its tail and can warm it when confronting rattlesnakes, creating a warning detectable by their infrared senses. Depending on climate and food availability, squirrels may become less active during cold weather or intense summer heat.
