Great Green Bush-Cricket
Tettigonia viridissimaRed
The Great Green Bush-Cricket is one of the largest katydids in much of Europe, with a leaf-green body, very long antennae, and powerful hind legs built for climbing and jumping through tall vegetation. In warm meadows, hedgerows, and field margins, it often stays hidden until movement or song reveals its presence.

The animal behind the card
Males produce loud rasping calls by rubbing specialized parts of the forewings together, turning summer grasslands into acoustic territory maps after dusk. Although it can nibble leaves and flowers, it also takes other insects, making it more of an opportunistic omnivore than a simple plant-eater.
Its eggs pass the winter in the ground, and new generations depend on seasonal warmth and suitable unmanaged vegetation. The Great Green Bush-Cricket is a reminder that even familiar meadow insects rely on structural diversity, quiet margins, and enough summer continuity for their life cycle to unfold.
