Common Mussel
Mytilus edulisBlue
The common mussel forms dense beds on rocky shores and in shallow northern seas. It anchors itself with strong byssal threads secreted by its foot, enabling colonies to withstand waves while individual shells close tightly during exposure at low tide.

The animal behind the card
Water drawn across the gills supplies oxygen and carries phytoplankton, bacteria and organic particles that the mussel filters for food. Large beds clear suspended material and concentrate nutrients, changing local water and sediment conditions.
Mussel beds create refuge for worms, crustaceans, snails and juvenile fish. Their larvae drift with plankton before settling, producing new threads and joining a bed whose tightly packed members protect one another from currents and predators.
