The emu is a tall, flightless bird of Australia's open forests, grasslands and dry interior. Its reduced wings disappear beneath shaggy feathers, but its long legs carry it rapidly across open ground and over great distances in search of seasonal rain.

Overview

The animal behind the card

Emus eat seeds, fruits, shoots and insects, swallowing small stones that help grind food in the gizzard. Their double-shafted feathers shade the body, while controlled breathing helps them cope with intense heat.

After the female lays large dark-green eggs, the male alone incubates the clutch for roughly eight weeks. He eats and drinks very little, then protects the striped chicks and leads them to feeding grounds until they can fend for themselves.
