Cane Toad
Rhinella marinaBlue
The Cane Toad is a large, heavy-bodied toad of warm wetlands, forest edges, and open country in the Americas. Dry, warty skin, a broad head, and swollen poison glands behind the eyes make it easy to recognize when it moves across damp ground after dark.

The animal behind the card
It eats insects, small vertebrates, carrion, and almost anything it can fit into its mouth, which makes it a remarkably flexible opportunist. When threatened, it can release toxic secretions from its parotoid glands, turning many would-be predators away after a dangerous lesson.
Outside its native range, introduced populations are famous for the pressure they can place on local wildlife. The Cane Toad is a lesson in biological force: tough, poisonous, adaptable, and able to reshape food webs when it arrives where predators have not learned its warning.
