Common Vampire Bat
Desmodus rotundusYellow
In the warm dark of tropical forests, the Common Vampire Bat leaves its roost only when the night has fully settled. Small and quiet, it hunts with a precise mix of echolocation, smell and heat cues that guide it toward sleeping mammals.

The animal behind the card
Unlike most bats, it is remarkably capable on the ground. Strong forelimbs let it run and hop toward a host before razor-sharp teeth open a tiny wound. Anticoagulants in its saliva keep the blood flowing while the bat laps rather than sucks its meal.
Back at the roost, this species is famous for social bonds. Individuals groom one another and may share food with hungry neighbors, turning a dark cave or hollow tree into a community built on memory and trust.
