Polar Bear
Ursus maritimusPurple
The Polar Bear moves across sea ice with the patience of a hunter built for distance, cold, and silence. Beneath its pale coat is dark skin and a thick layer of fat that help hold warmth while the animal waits beside breathing holes or crosses frozen water in search of seals.

The animal behind the card
Although it can swim powerfully and travel far, its hunting life depends on stable ice more than open ocean alone. A solitary adult may cover enormous home ranges, reading wind, scent, and pressure ridges with a confidence that makes the Arctic feel like a map beneath its paws.
Climate change has made that map less reliable, shortening ice seasons and forcing many bears to spend longer periods on land. The Polar Bear remains one of the clearest symbols of Arctic strength, and of how closely a top predator can be tied to the frozen platform under its feet.
