Goldfish
Carassius auratusYellow
The Goldfish began as a domesticated form of wild carp, yet even the familiar pond or aquarium varieties still carry the hardiness and flexible feeding habits of their ancestors. In calm water they browse almost constantly, sifting for plant matter, tiny invertebrates, and organic scraps.

The animal behind the card
Selective breeding produced an extraordinary range of colors, fins, and body shapes, but the species remains behaviorally adaptable and surprisingly long-lived under good conditions. Goldfish learn feeding routines quickly, explore their surroundings actively, and can survive temperatures that would overwhelm many ornamental fish.
When released outside captivity, however, they may grow larger than expected and alter freshwater habitats by stirring sediment and competing with native species. The Goldfish is therefore both a cultural companion animal and a reminder that even familiar domestic forms can have serious ecological effects.

Goldfish remember far more than the joke allows, learning colors, routines, and feeding schedules.
