Ocean Sunfish
Mola molaPurple
In temperate and tropical seas, an ocean sunfish drifts near the surface like a living shield, its body tall and flattened as if the ocean pressed it into shape. When it “basks” in sunlight, seabirds sometimes flutter down to pick at parasites, turning the fish into a floating cleaning station.

The animal behind the card
But the surface is only one chapter of its day. With slow, steady strokes of its dorsal and anal fins, it descends into deeper water to hunt, taking soft-bodied prey and whatever small animals it can overtake with surprising persistence.
Huge, strange, and vulnerable, the sunfish is often an accidental victim of fishing gear and drifting nets. Seeing one alive—tilting, glinting, unbothered by waves—feels like meeting a gentle giant that belongs to the open ocean’s most mysterious spaces.
