European Sturgeon
Acipenser sturioBlue
Deep in broad rivers and coastal waters, a European Sturgeon swims like a living relic from an older world. Its body is armored with bony plates, and a long snout points forward like the prow of an ancient ship.

The animal behind the card
Barbels hanging from the snout help the fish detect prey hidden in mud, where it searches for small invertebrates and fish. Individuals can grow to impressive lengths, dwarfed only by the slow scale at which they live.
European Sturgeon take years to reach maturity and can survive for several decades, some even longer. Their valuable eggs have made them targets for caviar, and conservation efforts now work to keep these river giants from vanishing completely.
