The animal behind the card
Strong swimming and formidable teeth help it capture other fish. The largest individuals can grow well beyond a metre. Despite its imposing appearance, it belongs to the bony fishes rather than the sharks.
This predator forms part of Africa's complex freshwater food webs. Currents, fish movements and changing water levels shape its environment. Protecting large river systems also safeguards the animals near the top of their food chains.
