Rao's snakehead, Channa andrao, is a small freshwater fish from northeastern India and one of the lesser-known members of the snakehead family. It is often associated with shallow, vegetation-rich waters where ambush tactics are more effective than long pursuit.

The animal behind the card
Like other snakeheads, it can supplement gill respiration with air breathing using a specialized suprabranchial organ. This adaptation is especially useful in warm or stagnant habitats where dissolved oxygen can drop sharply.
Compared with larger snakeheads, this species is still poorly documented in the wild, and local population data remain limited. Even so, it highlights how much hidden diversity exists in South Asian freshwater systems.
