Giant Leaf Insect
Pulchriphyllium giganteumGreen
The giant leaf insect lives among the foliage of Southeast Asian tropical forests. Its broad green body and flattened legs imitate a leaf, complete with the impression of edges and veins. Remaining still helps it disappear into the vegetation rather than confront predators.

The animal behind the card
It feeds on leaves and becomes more active when moving or feeding in subdued light. Young insects grow through successive moults, shedding their outer covering to make room for a larger body. The adult female is broad and heavy-bodied, with a particularly convincing leaf-shaped silhouette.
Females can reproduce without mating, producing offspring from unfertilised eggs through parthenogenesis. Males are much rarer in captive colonies. This unusual reproductive ability and remarkable camouflage make the species an example of the many ways insects adapt to life in dense foliage.
