Plains and GrasslandsPrairie Falcon
Falco mexicanusYellow
Above arid plains and rocky outcrops, the Prairie Falcon cuts through the air with fast, direct flight. Its pale underparts and mottled back blend well with open landscapes where shadows are short and cover is sparse.

Overview
The animal behind the card
Using steep dives and low surprise attacks, it targets ground squirrels, small birds and other agile prey. Keen eyesight and rapid reflexes leave little margin for escape once the chase begins.
Nesting on cliffs or in abandoned raven nests, it often returns to the same territories year after year. Far from the sea, this falcon has become a specialist in the open skies of inland grasslands.
Bestiary facts
Prairie falcons often approach prey at very low altitude, using the terrain to hide their attack.
