American Bison

Bison bisonRed

Across open plains and prairies, the American Bison moves like a dark, rumbling cloud of muscle and fur. A massive shoulder hump and thick forequarters give it impressive power for plowing through snow or brush.

Overview

The animal behind the card

Once millions ranged across North America, shaping grassland ecosystems with their grazing, wallowing and migrations. Their near disappearance due to hunting was one of the starkest warnings about human impact on wildlife.

Conservation efforts and managed herds have brought bison back to many protected landscapes. When a group gallops past, the ground still shivers with echoes of the old herds.
