Thick-billed Murre
Uria lomviaBlue
On sheer coastal cliffs, the Thick billed Murre nests in dense, noisy colonies that turn narrow ledges into crowded cities. Sleek black and white plumage gives it the look of a slender, upright penguin when it stands.

The animal behind the card
This seabird is an accomplished diver, plunging deep beneath the waves to chase fish and invertebrates with rapid wing strokes underwater. Parents carry whole fish crosswise in their beaks to hungry chicks perched precariously above the ocean.
When young murres are ready to leave, they tumble from the cliffs and flutter toward the sea, guided by the calls of their parents. The journey from rock to open water is a dramatic first step into an uncertain life.
