Red Panda

Ailurus fulgensGreen

In the misty forests of the Himalayas and southwestern China, the Red Panda moves along branches like a russet ghost. A ringed tail and masked face give it a charming, almost plush toy look.

Overview

The animal behind the card

Despite the name, it is not a close relative of the giant panda, though both share a fondness for bamboo. Flexible ankles allow it to climb headfirst down trees, a rare talent among mammals.

When it sits to eat, holding stems like a person with snacks, it seems to momentarily forget that the world beyond the branches exists.
