African Ostrich

Struthio camelusGreen

Towering above African grasslands, the African Ostrich lives in a body built for speed rather than flight. Long legs with powerful tendons allow this bird to sprint faster than most horses.

Overview

The animal behind the card

Its huge eyes act like early warning radars, scanning far horizons for predators while the rest of the flock feeds. When threatened, an ostrich can kick with enough force to deter even large carnivores.

Despite never leaving the ground, the African Ostrich rules the open plains as one of the most alert and athletic birds on Earth.
