The animal behind the card
It hunts mainly on the ground, pursuing insects, lizards and other small prey before seizing them with its strong bill. It can also catch snakes, although these are only one part of a varied diet. Despite preferring to run, it can fly short distances to clear obstacles or reach a perch.
Pairs defend a territory and build a nest in a shrub or small tree. In cool weather, the bird exposes dark skin on its back to the sun to warm itself. Its terrestrial habits and opportunistic hunting help it survive where water and food are widely scattered.
Bestiary facts
To warm up, a greater roadrunner exposes a patch of dark skin hidden beneath the feathers on its back.
