Sea Otter
Enhydra lutrisPurple
The sea otter inhabits the coastal waters of the North Pacific, often among kelp forests. Its broad, webbed hind feet propel it underwater, while smaller front paws handle prey. Rather than relying on a thick layer of blubber, it maintains exceptionally dense fur that traps insulating air against its skin.

The animal behind the card
It dives to collect sea urchins, crabs and shellfish, then returns to the surface to eat while floating on its back. Some individuals crack shells with stones, using their chest as a table. A high metabolism demands substantial meals even when the animal appears to spend much of its time resting.
By eating grazing urchins, otters help protect kelp forests and the fish and invertebrates they shelter. Mothers carry pups on their chest and teach them to forage. Historical hunting devastated the species, and pollution and vulnerable, fragmented populations still threaten its recovery.
Bestiary facts
Sea otters have loose skin pockets beneath their forelegs to carry prey collected during a dive.
