Violet Blanket Octopus
Tremoctopus violaceusYellow
The violet blanket octopus lives in the open sea rather than on the seabed. Females unfold a broad membrane between their long arms, creating the spectacular floating blanket that gives the animal its name. Its flexible body moves through the water with swimming and jet propulsion.

The animal behind the card
The sexes differ enormously in size: a female can approach two metres, while a male measures only a few centimetres. The smaller individuals are far less conspicuous than the expansive females. Both belong to the same species despite their radically different appearance.
Small blanket octopuses have been observed carrying detached tentacles of Portuguese man o' war as defensive weapons. Their tolerance of the stinging cells allows them to borrow another animal's protection. This pelagic octopus remains difficult to observe, spending its life in a vast, constantly moving habitat.
