The humphead wrasse is the largest living wrasse and an imposing resident of Indo-Pacific coral reefs. Mature adults develop thick lips and a prominent forehead hump, with winding facial lines that make each fish distinctive.

The animal behind the card
Powerful jaws and crushing throat teeth allow it to feed on molluscs, crustaceans, and even toxic reef animals. Individuals use caves and ledges as night shelters and may follow familiar routes across the reef for years.
Slow growth and late maturity make the species vulnerable to intense fishing. Protecting large adults is especially important because many change sex from female to male as they age.
