The animal behind the card
Quetzals spend long periods watching from shaded branches before flying out to pluck wild avocados and other fruits. They swallow many fruits whole and later disperse their seeds through the mountain forest.
A breeding pair excavates a chamber in soft, decaying wood and shares incubation duties. Habitat loss threatens the connected highland forests required by their seasonal movements.
