European Earwig
Forficula auriculariaYellow
The European earwig hides by day beneath bark, stones, fallen leaves and other cool, narrow shelters. At night its flattened body enters crevices, while the curved forceps at the end of its abdomen serve for defense, handling prey and unfolding its delicate hind wings.

The animal behind the card
An adaptable omnivore, it consumes soft plant material, fruit, fungi, dead matter and small invertebrates such as aphids. It can therefore be either a minor garden pest or a useful predator, depending on available food.
Female earwigs show unusually attentive parental care for an insect. They guard and clean their eggs in an underground chamber, protect them from mould and remain with the newly hatched nymphs during their first stages.
Bestiary facts
Female European earwigs clean and guard their eggs, a level of maternal care uncommon among insects.
