European Medicinal Leech
Hirudo medicinalisBlue
The European Medicinal Leech lives in warm, shallow ponds and marshes rich in aquatic vegetation. Its flexible segmented body swims with smooth waves, while a sucker at each end lets it anchor firmly to plants, stones, or a passing host.

The animal behind the card
Three toothed jaws open a small wound in the skin. Its saliva then releases substances including hirudin, which slows clotting and keeps blood flowing while the leech feeds. After a full meal, it can survive for a long time before needing to feed again.
Centuries of medical use made this animal famous, and carefully bred leeches still assist modern surgery by relieving trapped blood in healing tissue. Wild populations, however, depend on clean wetlands and suitable hosts, habitats that have declined across parts of Europe.
Bestiary facts
