Common Smooth-hound

The animal behind the card
Instead of the sharp cutting teeth associated with many sharks, it has flattened teeth arranged like paving stones. They form a crushing surface for crabs, lobsters, mollusks, and other hard-shelled animals, allowing the shark to specialize in food that faster open-water hunters often ignore.
This species gives birth to live young and grows more slowly than many bony fish. Its measured life cycle leaves populations vulnerable to sustained fishing pressure, whether the sharks are targeted directly or caught unintentionally in coastal fisheries.
