Overview

The animal behind the card

Its piercing mouthparts are built to draw nutrients from fallen seeds, especially those of lime trees and mallows, though it may also feed on other plant material and dead invertebrates. Despite its vivid warning-like colors, it is harmless to people and rarely causes serious damage to plants.

These insects spend much of their lives in company. Adults and wingless young share dense groups, use heat efficiently, and shelter together through colder periods. When spring returns, their red-and-black clusters become one of the most visible signs of insect activity waking again.
