Southern Elephant Seal
Mirounga leoninaBlue
The Southern Elephant Seal is a giant of subantarctic islands and the Southern Ocean. On land it looks heavy and awkward, but in water its torpedo-shaped body becomes a long-range diving machine, powered by blood, muscle, and fat reserves that store oxygen and energy.

The animal behind the card
Males can use their inflatable proboscis to roar, intimidate rivals, and defend harems during the breeding season. Those battles are costly, because dominant bulls may stay on their beach territories instead of feeding, relying on the thick blubber they built up at sea.
After breeding or molting, southern elephant seals travel far to hunt fish and squid. Their life links beaches, pack ice, and deep ocean into one huge arena where size matters, but endurance, navigation, and dive control matter just as much.
Bestiary facts
Southern elephant seals can remain underwater for about two hours and dive deeper than 1,500 metres.
