Hermit Crab
Coenobita clypeatusBlue
The Hermit Crab lives where tropical shores mix land, surf, and shelter, carrying a borrowed shell like a movable fortress. Its front half is armored, while the softer abdomen curls deep into a spiral shell that keeps moisture close and gives predators a hard problem to solve.

The animal behind the card
It searches beaches, roots, leaf litter, and tide edges for fruit, carrion, scraps, algae, and almost any edible remains. As it grows, it must molt and find larger shells, sometimes inspecting, testing, and trading homes with a precision that makes the shell as important as the crab itself.
Though small, a hermit crab connects land and sea. Adults roam coastal islands and mangroves, but reproduction still returns them to salt water, making clean shorelines and available shells essential to their survival.
Bestiary facts
A hermit crab does not make its spiral shell; it occupies an empty snail shell and replaces it as it grows.
