Alcon Blue Butterfly
Phengaris alconYellow
The Alcon Blue Butterfly is a small blue butterfly of damp meadows, wet heath, and marshy grasslands, often tied to places where marsh gentian grows. Males show blue upper wings while females are usually browner, and a wingspan of only a few centimeters makes the adult look delicate above wet vegetation.

The animal behind the card
Its life cycle is unusually dependent: caterpillars first feed inside marsh gentian flowers, then drop to the ground and must be adopted by Myrmica ants. Inside the nest, workers feed them until they complete development hidden among the colony, turning plant, ant, and butterfly into one fragile chain.
Because it needs both the right wet grassland management and nearby host ants, drainage, intensive mowing, abandoned grazing, and habitat fragmentation can break its cycle. A surviving Alcon Blue population is a sign that a damp meadow still has its gentians, ants, and timing in balance.
Bestiary facts
The Alcon Blue lays its eggs on marsh gentian, making one wildflower essential to its survival.
