Great Crested Grebe
Podiceps cristatusYellow
The Great Crested Grebe is an elegant diving bird of lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and reed-fringed wetlands, instantly recognizable in breeding plumage by its dark double crest and chestnut facial ruff. It sits low on the water and moves with a smooth, deliberate grace that almost disappears the moment it dives.

The animal behind the card
Its diet is built mainly around fish, with aquatic insects, crustaceans, mollusks, and amphibians filling the gaps. Pairs perform elaborate courtship displays, rising chest to chest from the water and shaking their crests in synchronized movements that turn a quiet lake into a stage.
Nests are often floating platforms anchored among vegetation, and young chicks may ride on a parent's back while the other adult brings food. The Great Crested Grebe is a water specialist through and through: beautiful in display, efficient underwater, and awkward only when forced onto land.
