Epaulette Shark
Hemiscyllium ocellatumGreen
The Epaulette Shark is a small reef shark from shallow tropical waters around northern Australia and New Guinea, named for the dark eye-like spots behind its pectoral fins. At low tide it can move through tide pools, coral flats, and exposed reef edges by pushing with its paired fins, almost walking across the bottom.

The animal behind the card
It hunts mostly at night, nosing through sand, rubble, and crevices for small crustaceans, worms, mollusks, and fish. Its compact body and flexible movement let it use spaces that larger sharks cannot enter, while its tolerance of warm, oxygen-poor pools helps it wait out harsh tidal conditions.
The species is not a giant predator but a specialist of narrow reef margins, where patience and endurance matter more than speed. The Epaulette Shark turns the boundary between land and sea into usable habitat, showing how unusual movement can become a survival strategy.
Bestiary facts
Epaulette sharks can walk across reef flats on their fins when the tide abandons them.
