Houbara Bustard

Chlamydotis undulataYellow

Across arid plains and semi desert scrub, the Houbara Bustard blends dusty browns and creams into a subtle camouflage. By day it often appears statuesque, standing still while the heat shimmers around it.

Overview

The animal behind the card

Males transform during courtship, fluffing throat feathers into extravagant frills and performing elaborate dances. Their diet is flexible, changing with the seasons from seeds and shoots to insects and small vertebrates.

This cautious bird lives a life of careful balance between showy displays and a constant need to remain unseen.
