Andean Mountain Cat
Leopardus jacobitaGreen
The Andean Mountain Cat is a small, thick-furred cat of high, wind-scoured Andean slopes, with ash-gray fur marked by fine spots and a long tail for balance on scree. It is among the least often seen felines, adapted to puna, dry shrub, and the thin air above the treeline, when researchers find it at all.

The animal behind the card
It preys on viscachas, small rodents, and ground birds, using stealth, patience, and short rushes over broken ground at dawn and dusk. Camera traps, scat, and a handful of field encounters confirm a tight elevational band, but much of its social life, home-range size, and true population remain only partly known.
Hunting, habitat loss, and expanding dogs and herded animals all squeeze a rare population that is now endangered. The Andean Mountain Cat is a high-altitude ghost, beautiful and hard to know, and a call to keep cold grassland, scree, and rock corridors intact for a cat almost never met face to face.
Bestiary facts
The Andean mountain cat is so elusive that camera-trap images provide much of what scientists know about its range.
