Western Honey Bee
Apis melliferaPurple
The Western Honey Bee is a social insect whose colonies can hold tens of thousands of workers, a long-lived queen, and seasonal drones, with foragers that read floral landscapes like living maps. Waggle dances pass distance and direction, turning a hive into a superorganism that shares information and reassigns labor as the season shifts.

The animal behind the card
They gather nectar, pollen, resin, and water, then process stores into honey, propolis, and brood food, while workers nurse larvae, build comb, and guard the entrance. A colony must keep a stable interior climate, hold parasites in check, and sometimes split, because swarming is reproduction for the whole family unit, not a single queen alone.
Habitat change, pesticides, and introduced pests and diseases have made many hives more fragile, wild and managed alike. The Western Honey Bee is one of our oldest agricultural partners, and a warning that a pollinator the world leans on is never guaranteed, only tended.
