Mahi-mahi
Coryphaena hippurusBlue
The Mahi-mahi is a fast-growing pelagic fish of warm oceans, instantly recognizable when fresh by its metallic blues, greens, and flashes of gold. Its body is built for speed in open water, and it often appears around floating debris, current lines, and weed mats where small fish and invertebrates gather.

The animal behind the card
It feeds aggressively on flying fish, squid, crustaceans, and other mobile prey, using speed and sharp turns rather than ambush. Growth is rapid, life is relatively short, and reproduction can occur early, allowing populations to rebound faster than those of many larger ocean predators.
Even so, the species depends on healthy pelagic systems and is closely tied to changing ocean conditions and fishing pressure. The Mahi-mahi represents the restless productivity of warm offshore waters, where drifting structure and constant movement shape life at the surface.
Bestiary facts
A mahi-mahi can change colour rapidly when excited, and its bright colours fade soon after death.
