Togian Babirusa
Babyrousa togeanensisRed
The Togian Babirusa is one of the strangest wild pigs on Earth, with males carrying upward-curving tusks that seem almost ornamental until viewed in the dense island forests where display, status, and species identity matter. Its body is lighter and more agile than that of many pigs, suited to steep tropical terrain and wet ground.

The animal behind the card
It forages on fruits, leaves, roots, and other forest foods, often moving quietly through cover near water. Although less heavily built than boars from continental habitats, it remains a strong and wary animal whose movements help connect forest floor feeding zones with the wider ecology of island vegetation.
Restricted to a small range and vulnerable to hunting and habitat pressure, the Togian Babirusa represents the fragility of island endemics. Protecting it is not only about saving an unusual mammal, but about preserving an isolated evolutionary line found nowhere else on Earth.
Bestiary facts
Babirusa tusks can grow upward through the face, making the animal look almost mythical.
