Mojave Desert Tortoise
Gopherus agassiziiPurple
The Mojave Desert Tortoise of the southwestern United States survives where heat, drought, and sparse vegetation would defeat most large reptiles, spending much of its life in burrows that buffer the extremes of the desert surface. These shelters hold cooler temperatures in summer, warmth in winter, and precious humidity year-round.

The animal behind the card
It feeds mainly on seasonal herbs, grasses, and flowers, storing water efficiently and timing activity around brief windows of favorable weather. Movement is usually slow and deliberate, but the animal's true strategy is patience: waiting out hard conditions rather than trying to overpower them.
Roads, habitat fragmentation, invasive plants, and disease have made many Mojave populations far more vulnerable than their tough appearance suggests. Protecting the Desert Tortoise means protecting the whole quiet architecture of the desert floor, from intact soils and native plants to the burrow networks that support life beyond the tortoise itself.
Bestiary facts
