The animal behind the card
Courtship is gentle but persistent, and both parents invest heavily in raising chicks, including the production of nutrient-rich crop milk. The species once fell to critically low numbers, then recovered through habitat restoration, predator control, and long-term monitoring.
Its recovery is still fragile, but it proves that patient fieldwork can reverse a near-loss. Each breeding season now carries not only new birds, but also a reminder that prevention and persistence matter more than last-minute rescue.
Bestiary facts
The wild pink pigeon population fell to around ten birds in 1990 before conservation work reversed the decline.
