Lemming
Lemmus lemmusYellow
The lemming is a compact Arctic rodent adapted to cold open landscapes, with dense fur, short ears, and high reproductive potential. Norway lemmings are especially known for multi-year population booms and crashes.

The animal behind the card
In winter, they stay active beneath the snow in subnivean tunnels, where insulation is better than exposed surface air. There they feed on roots, grasses, and mosses while reducing exposure to wind and many visual predators.
Lemmings are a crucial prey base for Arctic foxes, owls, and other hunters, so their cycles ripple through entire northern food webs. Contrary to a persistent myth, they do not intentionally commit mass suicide; the dramatic die-offs are ecological, not deliberate behavior.
Bestiary facts
Lemmings do not deliberately commit mass suicide; population booms can force risky migrations and water crossings.
