Sea Krait

Laticauda colubrinaYellow

Along tropical shores, a sea krait coils among rocks or rests in mangrove roots, its banded body striking in black and pale blue. On land its movements seem awkward, but in water it transforms into a graceful swimmer.

Overview

The animal behind the card

A flattened tail acts like a paddle, propelling the snake through coral reefs where it hunts eels and small fish. It must still breathe air, so regular trips to the surface punctuate its underwater patrols.

Female sea kraits often come ashore to lay eggs, choosing sheltered crevices above the tide line. This dual life, part ocean and part land, makes them one of the more unusual snakes to share the shoreline.

Bestiary facts

Sea kraits are half ocean hunter, half land sleeper, splitting life between two worlds.
