JungleMalayan Tapir Calf
Tapirus indicusYellow
In the dim light of a rainforest undergrowth, a tapir calf looks like a walking piece of chocolate drizzled with cream. Its striped and spotted coat breaks up its outline so completely that it seems to vanish between shafts of sunlight.

The animal behind the card
The calf follows close behind its mother, copying her habit of sniffing every leaf and fruit with that flexible, trunk like snout. It quickly learns which plants are tasty, which are bitter and which fruits are worth wading into a stream to reach.
As months pass, the bright baby pattern fades into the solid coloration of an adult, but the cautious habits remain. Step by step, this shy little browser becomes one of the forest’s quiet gardeners, spreading seeds in its wake.
Bestiary facts
A baby Malayan tapir looks striped and spotted, nothing like the black-and-white adult it becomes.
