Kiwi
Apteryx mantelliPurple
The Kiwi shuffles through the New Zealand forest at night, more nose than eyes in the dark. Its round, feathered body and long probing bill make it look almost like a walking, breathing seed with legs.

The animal behind the card
Unlike most birds, the Kiwi's nostrils sit at the tip of its bill, allowing it to sniff out worms and insects hidden deep in the soil. Soft, hairlike feathers and tiny, almost invisible wings complete the illusion of a creature halfway between bird and mammal.
Kiwis lay eggs so large compared to their body size that they seem like a magic trick of biology. Threatened by introduced predators, they rely on careful conservation work so their faint calls and rustling steps continue to haunt the forest floor.
